YouTube UTM Builder
Build tracking links for your video description, comments, info cards and end screens. Every field is prefilled with the values we recommend for YouTube, so your clicks land in the right channel in Google Analytics.
Why these values
utm_source=youtube- GA4 recognizes
youtubeas a video site. Stick to this exact spelling on every link, so all YouTube clicks add up in one row. utm_medium=video- GA4 puts any medium containing “video” into the Organic Video channel. Using the same medium everywhere keeps your reports in one place.
utm_campaign= the video- One campaign per video lets you compare videos against each other in your reports.
utm_content= where the link sits- Description, comment, info card or end screen. This shows which spot on YouTube actually gets the click.
utm_term= extra info- Optional. Add a tag, a series or a date, so you can group videos later, e.g. all videos from one series.
- Lowercase with underscores
- UTM values are case-sensitive.

YouTube UTM FAQ
Will it hurt my SEO to use links with UTMs?
No. Links in YouTube descriptions and comments are nofollow, so they don't pass ranking signals either way. Adding UTM parameters doesn't change that.
On your own site, make sure the landing page has a canonical tag that points to the clean URL. Most website builders, such as WordPress, Shopify and Webflow, add one by default. Google then treats the tagged and untagged versions as one page.
One rule to follow: never put UTMs on links between pages of your own site. In GA4 they start a new session and overwrite the original source.
How can I create these links in bulk?
In a spreadsheet, put the landing page URL in column A, the campaign in column B and the content in column C. Then use this formula:
=A2&IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("?",A2)),"&","?")&"utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign="&B2&"&utm_content="&C2
To turn a video title into a campaign value, use =LOWER(SUBSTITUTE(TRIM(title)," ","_")).
With TubeTrack, you don't build the links yourself. It creates a tracking link for every video, and we can import the existing links from your video descriptions in bulk.
Can I shorten the links?
Yes, if you use TubeTrack. Every video gets its own short tracking link, and each click is tied back to the video it came from.
Short links also redirect, so if a landing page moves, you change the destination once and every video that links to it keeps working.
Can I hide the long URL?
Not inside YouTube. Descriptions and comments show the full URL as text. You can't add link text the way you can on a website.
You can make it shorter and cleaner:
- Use a short link, e.g. from TubeTrack.
- Set up a redirect on your own domain, e.g.
yoursite.com/guide, that forwards to the full tagged URL. The UTMs still arrive, because the redirect target contains them.
How can I see this information in Google Analytics?
In GA4, go to Reports › Acquisition › Traffic acquisition and set the primary dimension to Session source / medium. Your tagged clicks show up as youtube / video.
- Session campaign shows each video (
utm_campaign). - Session manual ad content shows where the link sat (
utm_content). Add it as a secondary dimension. - Session manual term shows your extra info (
utm_term).
Standard reports can take 24–48 hours to fill in. To test a link right away, click it and check the Realtime report.

What will my YouTube UTMs allow me to do?
They show what happens after the click. YouTube Studio tells you how a video performs on YouTube. UTMs tell you:
- which videos send visitors to your site
- which spot gets the click: description, comment, info card or end screen
- which videos lead to signups and sales
With that, you can compare videos by business results instead of views and make more of the topics that sell.
Without UTMs, a lot of YouTube traffic shows up in GA4 as referral or direct, especially clicks from the YouTube app.
How can I track sales from UTM clicks?
Send a purchase event with the order value to GA4 and mark it as a key event. The Traffic acquisition report, broken down by Session campaign, then shows key events and revenue per video.
There are two common gaps:
- Checkout on another domain, such as Stripe, ThriveCart or Kajabi. Without cross-domain tracking, the YouTube source is lost at checkout.
- Buyers who come back later, from an email or on another device. GA4 gives the credit to that last visit, not the video.
TubeTrack connects the video to the signup by email, so a sale still counts for the video when the buyer comes back days later.
